W9D5 - Forum (Judge the Crime)

by Kati Evans

Here is the full production script for Week 9, Day 5.

To ensure this fills the 30–60 minute window, this script relies on a gamified segment called "Judge the Crime." You will present complex legal scenarios and ask the audience to act as the Magistrate. The debate over the correct punishment is where the time (and fun) comes from.

Crucial Note: Ensure Plant A and Plant B are present. Their questions help bridge the gap between "Crime" (Week 9) and "The Trial" (Week 10).

📜 SECOND LIFE SCRIPT: WEEK 9, DAY 5

Event: The Forum ("Judge the Crime") Host: Kati Evans Target Duration: 40–50 Minutes (Highly Interactive)

🟢 PRE-EVENT CHECKLIST

  • [ ] Rez the Stage.

  • [ ] Props: A Gavel (if you have one to hold/rez) or a heavy book to slam.

  • [ ] Staff: Ensure Plant A and Plant B are in the audience.

  • [ ] 1:00 PM: Announce 5-minute gathering period.

🎤 PART 1: THE RECAP (Kati)

(Walk to the podium. Look stern. The fun of the Market weeks is gone; this is serious business.)

[Chat Block 1] /me steps onto the stage, resting her hands on the podium. She scans the crowd, looking for troublemakers out of habit. "Tal, Citizens. We have reached the end of Week 9. The week of Blood & Steel."

[Chat Block 2] "It has been a grim week. On Day 1, we learned the price of Theft—the Ear and the Hand. On Day 2, we watched Gareth lose his hand because he would not stop stealing."

[Chat Block 3] "On Day 3, the Poet spoke of the Mark of the Beast—the social death of the notched ear. And yesterday... we saw Torian ruined because he punched a Guard."

[Chat Block 4] "Today, we turn the tables. Usually, you stand before the Magistrate. Today... You are the Magistrate."

[Chat Block 5] "I will present you with three crimes. You must look at the Law, look at the criminal, and decide the sentence. Be warned: If you are too soft, the City falls to chaos. If you are too hard, you become a tyrant."

⚖️ PART 2: JUDGE THE CRIME (Interactive Game)

[Chat Block 6] /me picks up the gavel (or book) and taps it once. "Case Number One."

[CASE 1: THE BROKEN WINDOW] "The Facts: A Free Man gets drunk at the tavern. He stumbles outside and throws a rock through a merchant's shop window. The glass shatters. He enters the shop, looks around, gets scared, and runs away without taking anything."

[Chat Block 7] "The Question: He is caught. Is he a Thief? What is his physical punishment? Ear Notch? Hand? Or something else?"

(WAIT 30-40 SECONDS. Encourage debate. Someone will likely say "Attempted Theft" or "Ear Notch.")

[Chat Block 8 - The Verdict] "Verdict: RESTITUTION (Fine) & WHIPPING."

[Chat Block 9] "Why not the Ear? Because he did not take. Law 4.3.1 is Property Damage. 'Willful or negligent damage... shall be punished by full restitution.'"

[Chat Block 10] "He must pay for the window. If he cannot pay? Public Whipping. But he keeps his ear. There is a difference between breaking and taking. A Magistrate must know the difference."

[Chat Block 11] /me taps the gavel again. "Case Number Two."

[CASE 2: THE LOUD MOUTH] "The Facts: A woman stands in the market square. She is screaming that the Baker puts sawdust in his bread and poisons children. The Baker proves to the Magistrate that his flour is pure. The woman admits she lied because the Baker rejected her affection."

[Chat Block 12] "The Question: What is her crime? And what is the punishment?"

(WAIT 30-40 SECONDS. Look for answers like "Lying" or "Slander.")

[Chat Block 13 - The Verdict] "Verdict: FINE (Slander)."

[Chat Block 14] "Law 4.3.3: Slander. 'Knowingly spreading falsehoods shall incur a fine for the first offense.'"

[Chat Block 15] "If she continues to do it after the fine? Then the Magistrate may escalate. But for the first lie? She pays gold. Words have a price."

[Chat Block 16] /me taps the gavel a third time. "Case Number Three. The Tricky One."

[CASE 3: THE ASSASSIN'S BLADE] "The Facts: A man with the Black Dagger mark enters the city. He walks down the main street. He draws his long knife to clean his fingernails. A Guard sees the naked steel."

[Chat Block 17] "The Question: Does the Guard arrest him for Assault or Brandishing? Yes or No?"

(WAIT 30-40 SECONDS. This is based on Law 1.5.2/1.5.5. It is a trap.)

[Chat Block 18 - The Verdict] "Verdict: NO. (Usually)."

[Chat Block 19] "Law 1.5.2 says: 'Assassins... may enter freely. If they draw their weapon, Warriors and Guards may act according to their Codes.'"

[Chat Block 20] "Technically, the Guard can attack if he feels threatened. But practically? A wise Magistrate knows that Assassins have their own Law. Unless he threatens a Citizen, we let the Black Caste clean their nails. Arresting an Assassin usually ends with a dead Guard. We choose our battles."

❓ PART 3: THE OPEN FORUM (Q&A)

[Chat Block 21] /me sets the gavel down. "You have judged well. Now, I open The Circle to you. Ask me about Crime, Punishment, or the Magistrate's duty."

(WAIT 30 SECONDS. If silence, Signal PLANT A.)

[PLANT A QUESTION] (Plant asks): "Mistress! What if I am framed? What if someone puts a stolen ring in my pocket? Do I lose my ear immediately?"

[Chat Block 22 - Answer] /me shakes her head. "No. Punishment follows Trial. That is next week's lesson."

[Chat Block 23] "Law 4.5.3 says all suspects are entitled to a hearing. You have the right to speak. You have the right to face your accuser. We do not cut first and ask questions later. If you are framed, you must prove it in the Courtroom."

(Signal PLANT B)

[PLANT B QUESTION] (Plant asks): "Mistress, can I buy my hand back? If I am rich and I steal, can I pay 1,000 tarns to keep my hand?"

[Chat Block 24 - Answer] /me looks stern. "No. The Law is not for sale."

[Chat Block 25] "If rich men could pay to avoid mutilation, the Law would only apply to the poor. That breeds revolution. Law 4.4.1 says 'Loss of a hand.' It does not say 'Loss of a hand OR a bag of gold.' The bone must be paid."

(Optional: Signal PLANT C if needed)

[PLANT C QUESTION] (Plant asks): "Mistress, what is the punishment for killing a slave?"

[Chat Block 26 - Answer] /me shrugs. "Property Damage. Law 4.3.1 and Law 6.2.4."

[Chat Block 27] "You cannot 'Murder' a slave, because a slave is not a person. However, you must compensate the Owner. If you kill a cheap kettle girl, you pay a few coppers. If you kill a trained pleasure slave, you might owe 500 Gold Tarns. If you cannot pay... you might be enslaved for Debt."

🏁 THE CLOSING

[Chat Block 28] /me smooths her robes. "You have survived the week of Crime. You know the cost of the Cut."

[Chat Block 29] "Next week, we enter the cage. Week 10: The Trial Process."

[Chat Block 30] "We will discuss Warrants—when a Guard can touch you. We will discuss False Testimony—the crime of lying to the Judge. And we will see a play about a man who tried to save his friend with a lie, and paid the ultimate price."

[Chat Block 31] "The Circle is closed!"

(Signal Crier/Slave to end.)
