Week 08 March 02 - 07

Phase 3: Commerce & Contracts

Week 8: The Merchant’s Code

  1. Licensing: Registering a business & Peddler rules.
  2. Weights: The Official Stone (Avoiding fraud).
  3. Coin: Clipping coins and forgery.
  4. Taxes: Sales tax collection (1%).
  5. Market Day: Practical demo of weighing goods at the Circle.

Week 8 Production Package.

This week is a mix of Advanced Business (Contracts & Slaves) and Animal Control (The Beast Players). This is crucial because "Animal" players often struggle with the specific rules of the sim (like the 3-warning rule), so this is a polite way to educate them.

πŸ“‚ PROJECT: THE CIRCLE - WEEK 8 (MERCHANT LAW II & BEASTS)

Theme: Contracts, Kajirae Limits, & Animal Laws Goal: Teach how to make a deal legal, how to use slaves in shops, and how animals must behave.

πŸ”” LOGISTICS: CRIER MACROS

Give these to the slave running the streets.

15-Minute Warning: /shout πŸ”” HEAR YE! The Circle gathers in 15 minutes! Merchants and Beast-Keepers! Do you know the rules of the Claw and the Coin? Come learn! πŸ””

Start of Event: /shout πŸ”” THE CIRCLE is now in session! From Scribe seals to Beast leashes—the Law covers all! Gather round! πŸ””

πŸ“œ DAY 1: THE LECTURE (Script for Kati)

Topic: The Tools of Trade (Contracts & Slaves)

[OPENING] "Tal. Welcome to Week 8. We continue our look at the Marketplace." "A merchant needs two things: A signed paper and a pair of hands. Today we talk about Contracts and Kajirae."

[SECTION 1: THE CONTRACT] "Law 1.8 states clearly: 'The Scribes must prepare, certify, and seal all contracts.'" "A handshake is honorable, but a handshake does not hold up in court. If you are lending money, selling a house, or making a large trade, go to the Scribes. Law 1.8.1 requires a date, time, and a seal. Without it, your deal is just air."

[SECTION 2: SLAVES IN BUSINESS] "Now, for your help. Many of you use kajirae in your shops. But be careful." "Law 5.8.1'The handling of coin directly shall be reserved for the Free.'" "A slave cannot take coin from a hand. Law 5.8.2 allows them to use a box or tray. But they cannot count change into a Free Person's palm. Do not insult a customer by making them touch a slave to pay you."

[SECTION 3: AUTHORITY] "And remember Law 5.8.3: Slaves cannot sign papers. They cannot witness contracts. They are property. Property cannot witness for Property."

[CLOSING] "Tomorrow, our players will show you a man who trusted a slave to run his shop... and the disaster that followed. Dismissed!"

🎭 DAY 2: CREATIVE BRIEF (For Aria/Actors)

Topic: The Silent Witness

To: Aria / Caste of Players From: Kati Evans Theme: Law 5.8.3 (Slaves as Notaries) & 1.8 (Contracts)

The Goal: A drama about a deal gone wrong because the Merchant was lazy and didn't use a Scribe.

Characters:

  1. MERCHANT TOR: Lazy, wants to save the Scribe fee.

  2. BUYER: Shrewd, looking for a loophole.

  3. THE SLAVE: Standing there holding the paper.

Plot Outline:

  1. The Deal: Tor is selling a shipment of tharlarion meat.

  2. The Shortcut: Tor says, "Why pay a Scribe? My slave here saw us agree. She can mark an X on the paper."

  3. The Betrayal: A week later, the meat is rotten. The Buyer demands a refund. Tor refuses.

  4. The Magistrate: They go to court. The Buyer says, "There is no contract." Tor points to the paper with the slave's X.

  5. The Ruling: The Magistrate laughs. "Law 5.8.3: Slaves cannot be notaries. This paper is trash." Tor loses the money AND the meat.

  6. Moral: Pay the Scribe.

πŸ–‹️ DAY 3: CREATIVE BRIEF (For Aria/Poets)

Topic: The Beast Within

To: Aria / Caste of Players From: Kati Evans Theme: Law 5.9 (Animal Laws)

The Goal: A poem about the Animal Avatars (Panthers, Sleens, Birds). It should emphasize that they are beasts, not humans in fur suits.

Key Elements:

  • Silence: Law 5.9.2: No beast may speak. They are silent watchers.

  • Nature: Law 5.9.6: Act like the animal. Don't reason like a man.

  • The Leash: The safety of the tether.

Sample Imagery: "No words from the throat of the sleen, Only the hiss, and the fang unseen. The mind of a man is a complex maze, But the beast knows only the hunt and the graze. Respect the claw, but mind the chain, For the Law rules the city, and the beast rules the plain."

πŸ“– DAY 4: STORY BRIEF (For Guest Speaker)

Topic: The Three Growls

To: Guest Speaker / Storyteller Theme: Law 5.9.3 (Attacks & Warnings)

The Goal: A story teaching the "Roleplay Rule" of combat for animals.

Story Arc:

  • The Setting: A busy street. A large Tarsk (boar) is rooting around.

  • The Incident: A foolish boy pokes the boar with a stick.

  • The Warning: The Boar does not kill him instantly.

    • Warning 1: It snorts and paws the ground.

    • Warning 2: It bares its tusks and snaps the air.

    • Warning 3: It charges a few steps and stops.

  • The Attack: The boy pokes it again. Then the Boar attacks.

  • The Law: The Guards investigate. They see the Boar gave Three Warnings (Law 5.9.3). The Boar is innocent; the boy was foolish.

  • Moral: Respect the warnings of the beast. (And for players: You MUST emote 3 warnings before attacking).

πŸ—£️ DAY 5: THE FORUM (Script for Kati)

Topic: "The Zoo of Teletus" (Q&A)

[OPENING] "Tal. We end Week 8 with the wildest citizens of our city. The Animals." "We welcome beasts in Teletus, but only if they behave like beasts."

[SECTION 1: REALISM] "Law 5.9.6 says: 'Do not be a Human in an animal suit.'" "If I see a sleen sitting at the bar ordering a drink, I will call the Slaver to net it. Animals do not open latched doors (Law 5.9.12). Animals do not pick locks."

[SECTION 2: THE METER] "Law 5.9.1: All beasts must wear the appropriate Beast Meter. No meter? You are a ghost. Go get one."

[Q&A SESSION - PLANT QUESTIONS] "I open The Circle. Ask me about Kajirae or Beasts."

  • Plant Question 1: "Mistress, can I tie my sleen outside the Inn?"

    • Answer: "Yes. And Law 5.9.13 says if an animal is tied, it stays tied. It cannot chew through a chain in five seconds. Roleplay the strength of the iron."

  • Plant Question 2: "Mistress, my slave dropped the coin box. Can I make her pick up the coins?"

    • Answer: "She can pick them up, but she cannot hand them to you. Have her put them back in the box. Law 5.8.1 is strict. Direct handling of coin is for the Free."

[CLOSING] "Next week, we draw our steel. Week 9: Criminal Law. We discuss Theft,

πŸ“œ SCRIPT 1: WEEK 8, DAY 1 (THE LECTURE)

Host: Kati Evans Topic: The Tools of Trade (Contracts & Slaves)

(Instructions: Stand at the podium. Wait for Crier to finish.)

[LINE 1] Tal. Welcome to Week 8. We continue our look at the Marketplace. A merchant needs two things to survive: A signed paper and a pair of hands. Today we talk about Contracts and Kajirae.

[LINE 2] Law 1.8 states clearly: "The Scribes must prepare, certify, and seal all contracts." A handshake is honorable, but a handshake does not hold up in court. If you are lending money, selling a house, or making a large trade, go to the Scribes.

[LINE 3] Law 1.8.1 requires a date, a time, and a seal. Without it, your deal is just air. If the other man walks away with your gold, the Magistrate cannot help you if you do not have the paper.

[LINE 4] Now, for your help. Many of you use kajirae in your shops. But be careful. Law 5.8.1 says: "The handling of coin directly shall be reserved for the Free."

[LINE 5] A slave cannot take coin from a hand, nor place coin into a hand. Law 5.8.2 allows them to use a box or a tray. But they cannot count change into a Free Person's palm. Do not insult a customer by making them touch a slave to pay you.

[LINE 6] And remember Law 5.8.3: Slaves cannot sign papers. They cannot witness contracts. They are property. Property cannot witness for Property. If you try to use a slave's mark as a signature, you are committing fraud.

[LINE 7 - CLOSING] Tomorrow, our players will show you a man who trusted a slave to run his shop... and the disaster that followed. Come watch "The Silent Witness." Dismissed!

πŸ—£️ SCRIPT 2: WEEK 8, DAY 5 (THE FORUM)

Host: Kati Evans Topic: "The Zoo of Teletus" (Beasts & Q&A)

(Instructions: This is interactive. Be prepared to pause.)

[LINE 1] Tal. We end Week 8 with the wildest citizens of our city. The Animals. We welcome beasts in Teletus—sleens, tarsks, panthers—but only if they behave like beasts.

[LINE 2] Law 5.9.6 says: "Do not be a Human in an animal suit." If I see a sleen sitting at the bar ordering a drink, I will call the Slaver to net it. Animals do not reason like men.

[LINE 3] Law 5.9.12 says animals cannot open latched doors. Do not pick locks with your claws. If you are a beast, play the beast.

[LINE 4] Also, Law 5.9.1: All beasts must wear the appropriate Beast Meter. No meter? You are a ghost. Go get one before you hunt.

[LINE 5 - Q&A OPENER] I open The Circle. Ask me about Kajirae in business or the Laws of Beasts.

(Wait for questions. If silence, use a PLANT QUESTION below).

  • (If needed - Plant Question 1): "Mistress, can I tie my sleen outside the Inn while I drink?"

    • Your Answer: "Yes. And Law 5.9.13 says if an animal is tied, it stays tied. It cannot chew through an iron chain in five seconds. Roleplay the strength of the iron. If you escape a secure tie without effort, you are breaking the rules."

  • (If needed - Plant Question 2): "Mistress, my slave dropped the coin box. Can I make her pick up the coins?"

    • Your Answer: "She can pick them up, but she cannot hand them to you. Have her put them back in the box. Law 5.8.1 is strict. Direct handling of coin is for the Free. Do not touch her hand with the gold."

[LINE 6 - CLOSING] Next week, we draw our steel. Week 9: Criminal Law.

[LINE 7] We will discuss Theft, Assault, and the exact price of an ear. Keep your daggers sharp. The Circle is closed!

Week 8 - To Do Items

πŸ› ️ Immediate Setup (Administrative)

  • [ ] Create Notecards: Create 6 separate Notecards inside Second Life (Logistics/Crier + Days 1–5).

  • [ ] Distribute to Staff: Pass the relevant Notecards to your staff and talent pool.

  • [ ] Update the Crier: Ensure the street slave deletes Week 7 macros and installs the Week 8 versions (Topic: Claw and Coin).

  • [ ] Targeted Outreach: Send a specific notice to the Beast/Animal groups in the sim. Frame it as "The Circle recognizes the Beast Laws" to encourage their attendance (and compliance).

🎭 Creative Assignments (Delegation)

  • [ ] Send Brief to Aria (Day 2): Deliver "The Silent Witness" brief.

    • Action Item: Casting Note: The "Merchant Tor" needs to be played as lazy/dismissive, while the "Buyer" should be sharp and rules-lawyering.

  • [ ] Send Brief to Aria/Poets (Day 3): Deliver "The Beast Within" brief.

    • Action Item: Remind them that this poem isn't about "furry humans"—it's about instinct and silence (Law 5.9.2).

  • [ ] Recruit Guest Speaker (Day 4): Select the Storyteller for "The Three Growls."

    • Action Item: This is a tutorial disguised as a story. The speaker must clearly articulate the "Three Warnings" count so players learn the combat mechanic.

πŸ—“️ Daily Execution Checklist

Day 1: The Lecture (Kati)

  • [ ] Prop Requirement: You (or a slave assistant) need a Coin Box or Tray.

    • Action Item: Demonstrate Law 5.8.2 physically—have the slave hold the box while you drop coin in it, showing "No touching."

  • [ ] Review Script: Memorize Law 5.8.3 (Slaves cannot witness).

Day 2: The Play (Aria/Actors)

  • [ ] Prop Check:

    • The Contract: Needs to be a visible paper with a crude "X" on it.

    • The Meat: A crate or object representing the "Rotten Tharlarion Meat."

  • [ ] Blocking: The Magistrate needs to visibly dismiss the paper (throw it down or laugh at it) to emphasize its worthlessness.

Day 3: The Poem (Aria/Poets)

  • [ ] Atmosphere: If there are Beast players in the audience, ask the Poet to direct the lines "Respect the claw" toward them.

Day 4: The Story (Guest Speaker)

  • [ ] Mechanics Check: Ensure the storyteller describes the "Three Warnings" distinctively (Snort, Bare Tusks, Charge). This maps to the combat rules (Emote 1, Emote 2, Emote 3, Attack).

Day 5: The Forum (Kati)

  • [ ] Visual Aid: Have a Beast Meter (or a picture of one) to reference regarding Law 5.9.1.

  • [ ] Prep Plant Questions: Ensure your confederate is ready with:

    • "Tying the sleen?" (Law 5.9.13 - Roleplay the strength of the chain).

    • "Slave picking up coins?" (Okay to pick up, not okay to hand over).
