W2D2 - Play (Gatekeeper's Test)

by Kati Evans

Here is the full production script for Week 2, Day 2.

To ensure this event fills the 30–60 minute window, I have expanded the play into three distinct "Acts" or scenarios, and included a detailed analysis section for you to perform afterward.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: You must copy "PART 2: THE PLAY" into a Notecard and give it to Aria (or your actors) at least 24 hours in advance so they can prepare their costumes (Guard, Merchant, Panther/Taluna, Herald).

πŸ“œ SECOND LIFE SCRIPT: WEEK 2, DAY 2

🎀 PART 1: THE PROLOGUE (Kati)

(Walk to the podium. Wait for the crowd to settle.)

[Chat Block 1] /me steps onto the stage, but remains to the side, leaving the center clear. "Tal, Citizens. Yesterday, we discussed the hierarchy of the city: Citizen, Resident, and Visitor. We learned that while the Home Stone protects the Citizen, the Law of Entry judges the Visitor."

[Chat Block 2] "The City Gate is the mouth of Teletus. It decides what we swallow and what we spit out. But the rules of the Gate are not always obvious."

[Chat Block 3] "Today, the Caste of Players presents 'The Gatekeeper's Test.' You are about to see three strangers attempt to enter our city. Watch closely. One will be turned away for arrogance. One will be chased away for their nature. And one will pass untouched."

[Chat Block 4] "I present to you... 'The Gatekeeper's Test.' Actors, take the stage!"

/me steps off the stage and joins the audience to watch.

🎭 PART 2: THE PLAY (For the Actors)

(NOTE: Give this section to your Actors. The "Guard" stays on stage the whole time. The other actors enter and exit.)

[SCENE 1: THE ARROGANT MERCHANT]

(The Guard stands at attention. The Merchant walks up confidently, a sword clearly visible on his hip.)

The Merchant: /me walks toward the imaginary gate, head held high. He does not slow down. "Out of my way, Guard. I have spices to sell and thirst to quench."

The Guard: /me lowers his spear, blocking the path. "Halt. State your business and your Home Stone."

The Merchant: /me sneers, patting the sword on his hip. "My business is coin. My Home Stone is far away. I am a free man, and I go where I please. Step aside."

The Guard: "You are a Visitor. Law 1.5.2 states: 'All visitors are subject to Isle Law.' In Teletus, strangers do not walk the streets with naked steel on their hip."

The Merchant: "I need it for protection! Your streets are dangerous."

The Guard: /me steps forward aggressively. "Our streets are safe because I hold the steel. You have two choices: Peace-bind that weapon to your sheath with a cord, or turn around. We do not let armed strangers wander our markets."

The Merchant: /me grumbles, but takes a cord and ties his sword hilt. "Fine. But I will complain to the Council!"

The Guard: "You can complain to the wind. Move along." /me gestures for him to pass.

(Merchant exits.)

[SCENE 2: THE PANTHER GIRL]

(The Panther Girl approaches. She is wearing forest skins/furs and carrying a spear/bow. She looks wild.)

The Panther: /me creeps toward the gate, looking suspicious. She keeps her hand on her knife.

The Guard: /shout HALT! /me raises his spear immediately, taking a combat stance.

The Panther: /me hisses. "I want to trade! I have furs! I have meat!"

The Guard: "You have death on you, forest girl. Look at you."

The Panther: "I am a Free Woman! I have the right to trade!"

The Guard: "Not like that. Law 1.5.4 is clear: 'Panthers and Talunas are not permitted entry unless disguised as free women.'"

The Panther: "Disguise? I hide from no man!"

The Guard: "Then you do not enter. If you walk through this gate in those skins, you are game. I will collar you myself and sell you to the Kennels. Put on a robe, or go back to the woods."

The Panther: /me spits on the ground and backs away, fleeing. "Currs! City of stone and chains!"

(Panther exits.)

[SCENE 3: THE HERALD]

(The Herald approaches. He walks calmly. He wears a distinct GOLD SLASH (sash) across his chest.)

The Herald: /me approaches the gate. He carries no weapon, only a scroll case. He does not stop.

The Guard: /me starts to lower his spear, then sees the sash. He immediately snaps to attention and bows his head. "Tal, Emissary."

The Herald: /me nods once, barely acknowledging the guard. "Tal, Warrior. I bear words for your Ubar."

The Guard: /me steps aside completely, clearing the path. "Law 1.5.1. The Gate is open to the Voice of a City. Pass in peace."

The Herald: /me walks past the guard without breaking stride.

(End Scene. Actors bow.)

🎀 PART 3: THE ANALYSIS (Kati Returns)

(Wait for the actors to clear the stage. Walk back to the podium.)

[Chat Block 5] /me steps back up to the podium. "A round of applause for our players. They showed us the reality of the Gate."

[Chat Block 6] "Let us review what we saw. First, the Merchant. He thought because he was free in his own city, he could carry steel here. He was wrong. Visitors are subject to our laws. If the Guard tells you to bind your weapon, you bind it. Or you leave."

[Chat Block 7] "Second, the Panther. Many wild women try to enter Teletus. Law 1.5.4 is a trap for them. If they enter wearing their skins, they are declaring themselves 'Savages.' And savages are hunted. If she had worn a simple robe and hidden her knife, she could have entered."

[Chat Block 8] "Third, the Herald. Did you see the difference? The Guard did not stop him. He did not ask for a name. Why?"

[Chat Block 9] "Because of the Gold Slash. Law 1.5.1. That sash creates a bubble of diplomatic immunity. To stop a Herald is to insult the Ubar who sent him. If you see the Gold Slash in a tavern, do not pick a fight with him. You will lose."

❓ Q&A SEGMENT (Extending the Time)

[Chat Block 10] /me leans on the podium. "The Gate is the filter of the city. Does anyone have a question about who can enter, or what you can carry?"

(WAIT. If silence, use PLANT A.)

[PLANT A QUESTION] (Plant asks): "Mistress, you mentioned the Panther girl could be collared. Does that mean any woman in furs is fair game?"

[Chat Block 11 - Answer] /me nods slowly. "If she is inside the city walls? Yes. Furs and skins are the mark of the Taluna. If she wears them here, she is adhering to the code of the forest, not the code of the city."

[Chat Block 12] "However, if she wears a Veil or a Robe of Concealment over her skins, she is signaling that she respects our customs. Then, she is safe. It is about the signal you send."

(WAIT. Signal PLANT B.)

[PLANT B QUESTION] (Plant asks): "Mistress, what about the Black Dagger? The play didn't show an Assassin."

[Chat Block 13 - Answer] /me lowers her voice. "A wise observation. The play did not show an Assassin because an Assassin does not make a scene."

[Chat Block 14] "Law 1.5.5 allows Assassins to enter freely. If a man walks up with the Black Dagger brand on his forehead, the Guard will let him pass. We do not ask his business, because his business is death. If you see the mark, step aside."

🏁 THE CLOSING

[Chat Block 15] /me straightens her robes. "Remember the lesson of the Gatekeeper: Your status is determined by your appearance. Dress like a savage, get treated like a beast. Dress like a Diplomat, get treated like a King."

[Chat Block 16] "Tomorrow, we soften the mood. We will have a Poetry Reading titled 'The Golden Slash,' honoring the sanctity of the messenger."

[Chat Block 17] "Thank you to our players. The Circle is closed!"

(Signal Crier/Slave to end.)
