W2D1 - Lecture (Hierarchy)

 by Kati Evans

Here is the full production script for Week 2, Day 1.

To hit the 30–60 minute target, this script includes expanded explanations of the legal distinctions between "Citizen," "Resident," and "Visitor," as well as a robust Q&A segment.

📜 SECOND LIFE SCRIPT: WEEK 2, DAY 1

Event: The Lecture (Status & Entry) Host: Kati Evans Target Duration: 35–45 Minutes (plus gathering time)

🟢 PRE-EVENT CHECKLIST

  • [ ] Rez the Stage.

  • [ ] The Visuals: If you have a map of Teletus or a prop "Gate," place it near the podium.

  • [ ] Staff: Ensure Plant A and Plant B have their Question Notecards.

  • [ ] 1:00 PM: Announce 5-minute gathering period.

🎤 PART 1: THE WELCOME

(Walk to the podium. Wait for the crowd to settle.)

[Chat Block 1] /me steps up to the podium. She looks refreshed as she begins the second week of the cycle. "Tal, Citizens, Residents, and Travelers. Welcome back to The Circle. Last week, we laid the foundation. We looked up at the Ubar and down at the Home Stone."

[Chat Block 2] "Today, we look at each other. You may stand next to a man in the market, sharing the same air, buying the same bread. But the Law sees you differently. The Law puts a label on your forehead."

[Chat Block 3] "Are you a Citizen? Are you a Resident? Or are you a Visitor? The difference is not just a title. The difference can save your life—or cost you your freedom. Today, we define who belongs in Teletus."

📜 PART 2: THE HIERARCHY (Citizens vs. Residents)

[Chat Block 4] /me opens the heavy book of Law on the podium to Section 1.6. "Let us start at the top. Law 1.6 defines the Citizen. This is the highest rank under the Ubar. To be a Citizen, you must have sworn the Oath of Allegiance we demonstrated last week."

[Chat Block 5] "What do you get for this Oath? You get the Shield. A Citizen has Trial by Law. You cannot be seized without a warrant. You cannot be enslaved for debt without a judgment. You are the bedrock of the city."

[Chat Block 6] "Next is the Resident. Law 1.6.2 defines you. You live here. You work here. You pay taxes. But you have not sworn the Oath."

[Chat Block 7] "Why would someone do this? Perhaps you are an exile from Ar. You love Ar still, but you cannot go home. So you live here. Listen closely, Residents: You are guests who stayed for dinner."

[Chat Block 8] "We value you. We tax you. But you do not vote. You have no voice in the High Council. And your rights to trial are... thinner. You live here by our grace, not by your right."

[Chat Block 9 - Interactive Check] /me looks over the crowd. "I want to see the mix of this crowd. Raise your hand if you are a sworn Citizen of Teletus." (WAIT 15 Seconds for hands)

[Chat Block 10] "Now, raise your hand if you are a Resident—living here, but loyal to another stone, or to none." (WAIT 15 Seconds)

[Chat Block 11] "See the difference? In the market, you look the same. In the court, you are different."

⚔️ PART 3: THE STRANGER AT THE GATE (Visitors)

[Chat Block 12] /me turns the page of the book. "Now, we speak of the danger zone. The Visitor. The Foreigner. I see many of you passing through. Some of you come from Ar, or Turia, or the sands of the Tahari."

[Chat Block 13] "You think, 'I am High Caste in my city, so I am High Caste here.' You are wrong."

[Chat Block 14] "Law 1.5.2 is harsh but fair: 'All visitors, foreigners, and non-citizens are subject to Isle law.' Once you step through our gates, your customs vanish. The Law of Teletus is the only thing that matters."

[Chat Block 15] "If you steal here, you lose a hand here. You cannot say, 'But in my city, we only pay a fine!' The Magistrate does not care about your city. He cares about his city."

[Chat Block 16] "Ignorance of our customs is not a shield. If you are visiting, keep your head down. Keep your weapon bound. And keep your eyes open. If you break our peace, we will break you."

🛡️ PART 4: EXCEPTIONS (Diplomats & Assassins)

[Chat Block 17] /me pauses, raising a finger. "There are two exceptions to the rule of entry. Two types of people who walk through our gates untouched."

[Chat Block 18] "First: The Diplomat. Law 1.5.1. If a man approaches the gate wearing a Gold Slash across his chest, he is an Emissary. He speaks with the voice of another Ubar. We do not touch him. We do not hinder him. To strike a Herald is to declare war."

[Chat Block 19] "Second: The Assassin. Law 1.5.5. If a man approaches with the Black Dagger mark on his forehead... let him pass."

[Chat Block 20] /me lowers her voice. "Assassins walk in the shadows. Their Caste Law is older than ours. Unless they draw steel to kill a Citizen in open daylight, we respect their presence. Do not ask them their business. You do not want to know."

❓ PART 5: Q&A SEGMENT (Extending Time)

[Chat Block 21] /me leans back, relaxing her posture. "We have discussed the hierarchy of the city. Citizen, Resident, Visitor. I will now open The Circle for questions regarding your status or the rules of the Gate."

[Chat Block 22] "Who has a question for the Chair?"

(WAIT. Give the audience 30 seconds. If no one speaks, signal PLANT A.)

[PLANT A QUESTION] (Your Plant/Friend asks): "Mistress! I am a Citizen, but my brother is visiting from the North. If he gets into a fight, does my Citizenship protect him?"

[Chat Block 23 - Answer] /me shakes her head firmly. "No. Citizenship is not contagious. It does not spread to your family. You are protected; he is a Visitor."

[Chat Block 24] "If he breaks the law, he stands alone. You may hire an Advocate for him, you may speak for him, but you cannot give him your rights. Tell your brother to behave."

(WAIT. Signal PLANT B.)

[PLANT B QUESTION] (Your Plant/Friend asks): "Mistress, about the City Gate... if I am a Citizen, can I leave whenever I want? Or am I locked in?"

[Chat Block 25 - Answer] /me nods. "You are free. Law 1.5.1 says Citizens hold keys to the city. You may enter and depart freely. The gates are to keep enemies out, not to keep you in."

[Chat Block 26] "However... Law 3.1.2 advises Free Women to take a guard if they leave the walls. We cannot protect you in the wild. If you leave the gate and a sleen eats you, the Magistrate cannot arrest the sleen."

🏁 THE CLOSING

[Chat Block 27] /me smiles and closes the book. "That is the hierarchy. Citizen, Resident, Visitor. Know your place, and you will be safe."

[Chat Block 28] "Tomorrow, we move to the stage. Our players will perform 'The Gatekeeper's Test.' You will see exactly what happens when three different men try to enter the city—and why only some get in."

[Chat Block 29] "Bring your questions tomorrow. The Circle is closed!"

(Signal Crier/Slave to end.)
