W8D1 - Lecture (Tools of Trade)

by Kati Evans

Here is the full production script for Week 8, Day 1.

To ensure this fills the 30–60 minute window, I have added a specific interactive segment called "The Coin Test" where you act out proper and improper ways for slaves to assist in a shop. This visual demonstration is crucial for roleplayers to understand the specific animation/interaction mechanics required by the law.

📜 SECOND LIFE SCRIPT: WEEK 8, DAY 1

Event: The Lecture (The Tools of Trade) Host: Kati Evans Target Duration: 35–45 Minutes (plus gathering time)

🟢 PRE-EVENT CHECKLIST

  • [ ] Rez the Stage. (Props: A table/desk, a "Coin Box" or tray, and a Scroll).

  • [ ] Staff: Ensure Plant A and Plant B have their Question Notecards.

  • [ ] Helper: Ideally, have a Slave (your stage hand) stand near the podium to help demonstrate "The Coin Test."

  • [ ] 1:00 PM: Announce 5-minute gathering period.

🎤 PART 1: THE WELCOME (Paper & Hands)

(Walk to the podium. Hold a scroll in one hand. Look professional and business-like.)

[Chat Block 1] /me steps up to the podium, placing a rolled scroll and a heavy ledger on the wood. "Tal, Citizens. Welcome to Week 8 of The Circle."

[Chat Block 2] "Last week, we stood at the scale. We learned about Licenses and Weights. We learned how to measure the goods."

[Chat Block 3] "Today, we talk about how to move the goods. A Merchant needs two things to survive in Teletus: A signed paper... and a pair of hands."

[Chat Block 4] "We will discuss Contracts (Law 1.8) and the use of Kajirae in Business (Law 5.8). Because if your paperwork is weak, or your help is illegal, your shop will close."

📜 PART 2: THE CONTRACT (Law 1.8)

[Chat Block 5] /me taps the scroll with her finger. "Let us start with the Paper. Law 1.8 states clearly: 'The Scribes must prepare, certify, and seal all contracts.'"

[Chat Block 6] "Many of you make deals in the tavern with a handshake and a drink. That is honorable. But a handshake does not hold up in the Magistrate's Court."

[Chat Block 7] "If you are lending money, selling a house, or making a large shipment of grain... go to the Scribes. Law 1.8.1 requires a Date, a Time, and a Seal."

[Chat Block 8] "Without the wax seal of the Blue Caste, your deal is just air. If the other man walks away with your gold, the Magistrate cannot help you if you do not have the paper. Do not be cheap. Pay the Scribe."

🤲 PART 3: THE HANDS (Slaves in Business)

[Chat Block 9] /me gestures to the slave standing nearby (or an imaginary one). "Now, for your help. Many of you use kajirae in your shops. They are useful. They carry, they clean, they fetch."

[Chat Block 10] "But there is a line they cannot cross. Law 5.8.1: 'The handling of coin directly shall be reserved for the Free.'"

[Chat Block 11] "A slave cannot take coin from a Free Person's hand. Nor can she place change into a Free Person's hand. Why? Because it forces the Customer to touch property. It creates an equality that does not exist. It is an insult."

[Chat Block 12] "And Law 5.8.3: Slaves cannot sign papers. They cannot witness contracts. They are property. Property cannot witness for Property. If you try to use a slave's mark as a signature, you are committing fraud."

💰 PART 4: THE COIN TEST (Interactive Demo)

[Chat Block 13] /me steps out from behind the podium. She picks up the "Coin Box" (or bowl). "I want to demonstrate the right way and the wrong way to use a slave at the till. I need a volunteer to act as my Customer."

(Signal PLANT A or a volunteer to step up.)

[Scenario 1: The Wrong Way] "Scenario 1: I am the Merchant. My slave is here. You want to pay. Watch." /me (acting as slave) reaches out an open hand to the customer. "Give me the coin, Master."

[Chat Block 14] /me freezes. "STOP. Did you see that? Her skin touched his skin. She demanded coin from a Free Man. This is Illegal. If a Magistrate sees this, he will fine the Master for disrespecting the Customer."

[Scenario 2: The Right Way] "Scenario 2: Now, the legal way. Law 5.8.2." /me hands the Coin Box to the slave (or places it on the table). "The slave holds the box. The customer drops the coin into the box."

[Chat Block 15] "Do you see the difference? No touch. No direct exchange. The slave is just a piece of furniture holding the box. This is Legal."

[Scenario 3: Making Change] "Scenario 3: The Customer overpays. He needs change. The slave reaches into the box, grabs two coppers, and tries to hand them to him."

[Chat Block 16] "STOP. Illegal. She cannot hand him money. She must place the change on the Counter, or back in the box for him to take. The gap must be maintained."

❓ PART 5: Q&A SEGMENT (Extending Time)

[Chat Block 17] /me returns to the podium. "I will take questions now regarding Contracts, Shop Staff, or the limits of slave labor."

(Signal PLANT A)

[PLANT A QUESTION] (Plant asks): "Mistress! I run a busy tavern. Can my slave serve the drinks? Or is that 'conducting business'?"

[Chat Block 18 - Answer] /me nods. "She can serve. Law 5.8.2 says: 'Kajirae may deliver, hand over, and participate in the delivery of goods.'"

[Chat Block 19] "She can bring the paga. She can pour the wine. She is a serving vessel. But she cannot negotiate the price, and she cannot take the payment in her hand. Let her serve; you take the coin."

(Signal PLANT B)

[PLANT B QUESTION] (Plant asks): "Mistress, what if I write a contract on a napkin in the tavern? If we both sign it, is it binding?"

[Chat Block 20 - Answer] /me raises an eyebrow. "Technically? Law 1.8.1.b says: 'Merchant contracts not sealed by the Scribes may still be recognized under Merchant Law.'"

[Chat Block 21] "BUT... it is risky. If the other man says, 'That is not my signature,' or 'I was drunk,' the Magistrate will have a hard time enforcing a napkin. A 'Merchant Contract' usually implies a standard form, even if unsealed. Do not rely on napkins for house sales. Use them for small debts only."

🏁 THE CLOSING

[Chat Block 22] /me smooths her robes. "Merchants, train your girls well. A slave who grabs a customer's hand to take a coin may cost you that customer forever."

[Chat Block 23] "Tomorrow, we move to the stage. Our players will perform a drama titled 'The Silent Witness.'"

[Chat Block 24] "It is the story of a Merchant who was too cheap to hire a Scribe, so he used his slave to 'witness' a deal. You will see why property makes for a poor lawyer."

[Chat Block 25] "Dismissed!"

(Signal Crier/Slave to end.)
