W5D2 - Play (Tavern Mistake)

 by Kati Evans

Here is the full production script for Week 5, Day 2.

To ensure this fills the 30–60 minute window, the play is scripted with significant dialogue and emote opportunities. I have also included an interactive "Scenario Game" regarding Escorts to ensure the audience understands exactly who counts as protection.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: You must copy "PART 2: THE PLAY" into a Notecard and give it to Aria (or your actors) at least 24 hours in advance.

🎤 PART 1: THE PROLOGUE (Kati)

(Walk to the podium. Wait for the crowd to settle.)

[Chat Block 1] /me steps onto the stage, moving to the side to let the "Tavern" set take center stage. "Tal, Citizens. Yesterday, we spoke of the Veil and the Robe. We learned how a Free Woman protects her image through her dress."

[Chat Block 2] "But modesty is not just what you wear. It is where you go. There are places in Teletus where the air is thick with paga and smoke. Places where men loosen their belts and their tongues."

[Chat Block 3] "Many Free Women—especially those from other cities—think their Status protects them everywhere. They think, 'I am High Caste, I can go where I please.' They are wrong."

[Chat Block 4] "Today, the Caste of Players presents 'The Tavern Mistake.' It is the story of Lady Elara, who thought her family name was enough to protect her in a paga tavern."

[Chat Block 5] "Watch closely. Watch how quickly 'Independence' turns into 'Endangerment.' Actors, take the stage!"

/me steps off the stage and joins the audience to watch.

🎭 PART 2: THE PLAY (For the Actors)

(NOTE: Give this section to your Actors.)

[SCENE 1: THE ENTRY]

(The Tavern Master is wiping down the bar. Lady Elara enters. She walks confidently, chin up, looking around with disdain but curiosity.)

Lady Elara: /me steps into the tavern, lifting her hem so it does not touch the sawdust. She looks at the empty stool. "Barman! A cup of your finest wine. And wipe this stool, it is filthy."

Tavern Master: /me stops wiping the bar. He stares at her. He looks behind her, then back at her. "Tal, Mistress. Are you... lost?"

Lady Elara: /me laughs, a sharp, haughty sound. "Lost? Do you know who I am? My father is a Builder of the High Council. I am not lost. I am thirsty. Pour the wine."

Tavern Master: /me crosses his arms. "I know who your father is. Does he know you are in a paga hole?"

Lady Elara: "That is none of your business. I have coin. You sell drink. Do your job."

[SCENE 2: THE REFUSAL]

Tavern Master: "My job is to sell paga to men, Mistress. And to women who are... properly escorted." /me leans over the bar. "Where is your Companion? Your brother? Your Guard?"

Lady Elara: /me scoffs. "I do not need a babysitter. I am a Free Woman of Teletus! I have the right to walk my own city!"

Tavern Master: "You have the right to walk the street. You do not have the right to sit here. This is a place of men. If you sit here alone, the patrons will think you are... for sale."

Lady Elara: /me gasps, outraged. "How dare you! I am High Caste! If any man touches me, I will have him flogged!"

Tavern Master: "If you stay here, Mistress, the only one getting flogged will be me for serving you. Get out. Go back to your garden."

Lady Elara: "No! I demand service! I will not move until I get my wine!" /me sits defiantly on the stool, crossing her arms.

[SCENE 3: THE LAW ARRIVES]

(The Magistrate enters. He sees the situation immediately.)

The Magistrate: /me walks in, his voice booming. "What is this disturbance? Why is there a Lady on a barstool?"

Lady Elara: /me jumps up, looking relieved. "Magistrate! Finally! This peasant refuses to serve me. Arrest him!"

The Magistrate: /me ignores the Tavern Master and walks straight to Elara. He looks her up and down. "He refuses to serve you because he knows the Law better than you do, girl."

Lady Elara: "Excuse me?"

The Magistrate: "Law 3.1.3. 'Free Women shall not enter taverns without the escort of a Free Man.' You are unescorted. You are in a tavern. You are breaking the law."

Lady Elara: "But... I am High Caste!"

The Magistrate: "Then act like it! A High Caste woman does not display herself among drunkards. By sitting there, you act as a slut. And Law 3.3 says if you act like a slave, we can make you one."

Lady Elara: /me pales, stepping back. "I... I just wanted a drink."

The Magistrate: "You wanted attention. Now you have mine." /me grabs her arm firmly. "I will not collar you today, Elara. But I will escort you to your Father. And I will recommend he whips you to remind you of your station."

Lady Elara: /me hangs her head in shame. "Yes, Magistrate."

The Magistrate: "Tavern Master, you did well. Next time, throw her out."

(The Magistrate leads a shamed Elara away. Actors Bow.)

🎤 PART 3: THE ANALYSIS (Kati Returns)

(Wait for the actors to clear the stage. Walk back to the podium.)

[Chat Block 6] /me steps back up to the podium. "A round of applause for our players. Lady Elara was lucky. The Magistrate took her home. A Slaver might have taken her somewhere else."

[Chat Block 7] "Let us analyze Law 3.1.3. Why does it exist? Is it to oppress women? No. It is to preserve Order."

[Chat Block 8] "A Paga Tavern is a place of rough men, gambling, and slaves. It is a volatile environment. If a Free Woman walks in alone, she disrupts the dynamic. Men fight over her. Insults are thrown. Chaos ensues."

[Chat Block 9] "Also, consider Reputation. In Gor, a woman's reputation is her currency. If you are seen sitting alone at a bar, you are signaling that you are available. Do not send signals you do not mean."

🛡️ PART 4: THE ESCORT GAME (Interactive)

[Chat Block 10] /me leans forward. "The Law says you need an Escort. But who counts as an Escort? I will give you a companion. You tell me: Valid Escort or Invalid Escort?"

[Scenario 1] "Scenario 1: Lady Elara enters the tavern with her Male Slave, a strong tower slave. He carries a club. Is he a valid escort?" (WAIT. Answer: NO.)

[Chat Block 11] "Answer: INVALID. A slave is property. Property cannot escort a Free Person. He has no standing to defend her honor. If she is challenged, he cannot speak for her."

[Scenario 2] "Scenario 2: Lady Elara enters with her 10-year-old brother. He is Free, but a child. Valid Escort?" (WAIT. Answer: YES/DEBATABLE, but legally Yes.)

[Chat Block 12] "Answer: VALID (Technically). He is a Free Male of her blood. He counts as a chaperone. However, it is foolish. He cannot defend her. But legally? She is not 'alone.'"

[Scenario 3] "Scenario 3: Lady Elara enters with a Mercenary she hired at the gate five minutes ago. Valid Escort?" (WAIT. Answer: YES.)

[Chat Block 13] "Answer: YES. A hired sword is a valid escort. As long as a Free Man stands between her and the crowd, she is compliant with Law 3.1.3."

❓ PART 5: Q&A SEGMENT

[Chat Block 14] "I will take questions now regarding Public Conduct, Taverns, or Forbidden Places."

(Signal PLANT A)

[PLANT A QUESTION] (Plant asks): "Mistress! What about the Warrior's Hall? Can a Free Woman go there to watch the practice?"

[Chat Block 15 - Answer] /me shakes her head. "Law 3.1.4. 'Free Women shall not enter the Warrior’s Hall unescorted.' It is the same rule."

[Chat Block 16] "The Hall is a place of sweat, blood, and training. It is not a theater for ladies to ogle the men. Unless you are a Physician on business or the Ubara herself, stay out. Warriors hate distractions."

(Signal PLANT B)

[PLANT B QUESTION] (Plant asks): "Mistress, I own a tavern. Can my wife work behind the bar? Or is she breaking the law?"

[Chat Block 17 - Answer] /me nods. "A practical question. If she Owns or Works there, she is not 'entering' as a patron. She is conducting business."

[Chat Block 18] "However, she should remain behind the bar or in the kitchen. If she sits at a table and drinks with customers, she crosses the line. A working woman is respectable; a drinking woman is vulnerable."

🏁 THE CLOSING

[Chat Block 19] /me smooths her robes. "Ladies, enjoy the city. But know your geography. There are places for silk, and places for steel. Do not mix them."

[Chat Block 20] "Tomorrow, we turn to poetry. We will hear a reading titled 'The Shield of Silk.'"

[Chat Block 21] "It reframes the Veil not as a cage, but as a wall that protects the treasure within. It is a beautiful piece."

[Chat Block 22] "Thank you to our players. The Circle is closed!"

(Signal Crier/Slave to end.)
