W1D2 - Play (The Traitor's Folly)

by Kati Evans

Here is the full production script for Week 1, Day 2.

To ensure this event fills 30 to 60 minutes, I have structured it into three distinct parts:

  1. The Prologue: You review yesterday's lesson and set the stage (10 mins).

  2. The Performance: The actual play, acted out with full emotes (15–20 mins).

  3. The Epilogue: You return to the podium to dissect the play and answer questions (15–20 mins).

Special Note: I have included the Script for the Actors at the bottom. You will need to put that into a Notecard and give it to Aria (or whoever is acting) before the event so they know their lines.

📜 SECOND LIFE SCRIPT: WEEK 1, DAY 2

Event: The Player's Stage ("The Traitor's Folly") Host: Kati Evans + 3 Actors (Drusus, Stranger, Warrior) Target Duration: 40–50 Minutes

🟢 PRE-EVENT CHECKLIST

  • [ ] Rez the Stage.

  • [ ] Actors: Ensure Drusus, The Stranger, and The Warrior have their costumes and scripts.

  • [ ] 1:00 PM: Start formal RP, but announce a 5-minute gathering period.

🎤 PART 1: THE PROLOGUE (Kati)

(Walk to the podium. Wait for the crowd to settle.)

[Chat Block 1] /me steps onto the stage, but stands to the side of the podium today. She gestures to the empty space behind her where the actors will soon stand. "Tal, Citizens. Yesterday, we spoke of the Law in abstract. We spoke of the Ubar, the Home Stone, and the dark shadow of Treason."

[Chat Block 2] "But laws are just words on a scroll until a man breaks them. It is easy to say, 'I will never betray my city.' It is harder to recognize Treason when it smiles at you and offers you a bag of gold."

[Chat Block 3] "Today, the Caste of Players has prepared a cautionary tale for us. It is titled 'The Traitor's Folly.'"

[Chat Block 4] /me looks over the crowd seriously. "I want you to watch closely. Watch the character of Drusus. He is not an evil man. He does not hate the Ubar. He is just a man with an empty purse and a loose tongue. Watch how easily he falls."

[Chat Block 5] "I present to you... 'The Traitor's Folly.' Actors, take the stage!"

/me steps off the stage and joins the audience to watch.

🎭 PART 2: THE PLAY (For the Actors)

(NOTE: These lines are spoken by the ACTORS. You watch.)

[SCENE 1]

(Drusus paces back and forth, looking at an empty pouch.)

Drusus: /me shakes his coin pouch upside down. A single copper falls out. He kicks the dirt. "Empty! The tax collector takes his share, the baker raises his prices... how is a man to live in this city?"

The Stranger: /me steps out from the shadows. He wears a hooded cloak. He moves smoothly, like a snake in the grass. "Hard times, citizen? The city is heavy on the poor, is it not?"

Drusus: /me jumps slightly, startled. "Who are you? I have no coin for beggars."

The Stranger: /me chuckles darkly, jingling a heavy bag of gold at his belt. "I do not beg, friend. I give. I am a merchant from... far away. I am looking to expedite my shipments."

Drusus: /me eyes the gold bag greedily. "Expedite? How?"

[SCENE 2]

The Stranger: "The main gates are so slow. The guards check every wagon. It ruins my fruit. I simply need... a copy of the key to the East Service Gate."

Drusus: /me hesitates, looking around nervously. "The Service Gate? That is a Ubarate lock. I work there, yes... but to copy the key?"

The Stranger: "It is just a service gate, friend. Not the Palace. Not the Treasury. Just a door for garbage and fruit. Who does it hurt?" /me pulls a gold tarn out of the bag and holds it up so it catches the light.

Drusus: "It... it is just a door." /me reaches for the coin, his hand shaking. "And I need the coin. The Ubar has plenty of keys. He won't miss a copy."

The Stranger: "Exactly. Bring me the wax impression tomorrow. And this bag is yours."

[SCENE 3]

(The Warrior steps out from behind a crate/prop, hand on his sword hilt.)

The Warrior: /shout HALT!

Drusus: /me screams and drops the coin. He tries to run, but stumbles. "I did nothing! We were just talking!"

The Warrior: /me draws his blade with a metallic ring, pointing it at Drusus's throat. "I heard enough. You agreed to copy a key to the City Walls."

Drusus: /me falls to his knees, weeping. "It was just a service gate! I am not a spy! I am a loyal citizen! I would never hurt the Home Stone!"

The Warrior: "Your intent does not matter. Your poverty does not matter." /me looks to the crowd (the audience). "Law 1.4, Subsection G: Making unauthorized key copies of Ubarate buildings is Treason."

The Stranger: /me vanishes into the shadows (or is grabbed by another guard if you have one).

The Warrior: /me grabs Drusus by the collar and drags him toward the edge of the stage. "You sold your city for a piece of gold. The price of Treason is Death."

Drusus: /shout NO! MERCY! I DIDN'T KNOW!

(The Warrior drags him off stage. End Scene.)

🎤 PART 3: THE EPILOGUE (Kati Returns)

(Wait for the actors to bow and clear the stage. Walk back to the podium.)

[Chat Block 6] /me steps back up to the podium, the echo of Drusus's screams still hanging in the air. She waits for the audience to settle. "A tragedy. And yet, it happens every year."

[Chat Block 7] "Drusus said, 'I am not a spy.' And he was right. He was not a spy. He was a fool. But the Home Stone does not distinguish between the malice of a spy and the foolishness of a greedy man. The gate opens just the same for both."

[Chat Block 8 - Analysis] "Let us analyze the crime. When did Drusus become a Traitor? Was it when he handed over the key? No."

[Chat Block 9] "He became a Traitor the moment he agreed to bypass the security of the city for personal gain. He put his own hunger above the safety of the rest of us."

[Chat Block 10] "Law 1.4 is absolute. Maps. Keys. Codes. If you are not authorized to have them, do not touch them. Do not draw them. Do not sell them."

❓ Q&A SEGMENT (Extending the Time)

[Chat Block 11] /me leans on the podium. "We have time to discuss the performance. Does anyone have a question about what they just saw, or the Law governing it?"

(WAIT. If silence, use PLANT A.)

[PLANT A QUESTION] (Plant asks): "Mistress, the Stranger got away in the play! What happens if a visitor asks me for a key?"

[Chat Block 12 - Answer] /me nods. "If a Stranger asks you for a key, or a map, or the patrol schedules... you do not say 'No.' You say, 'Let me check,' and you walk straight to a Guard."

[Chat Block 13] "If you report a spy, you are a hero. If you ignore a spy, you are complicit. That Stranger was testing the defenses. Drusus failed the test."

(WAIT. Signal PLANT B.)

[PLANT B QUESTION] (Plant asks): "Mistress, I am a locksmith (or scribe). I make keys for a living. Am I in danger?"

[Chat Block 14 - Answer] /me smiles slightly. "If you are authorized, no. But you must keep records. If you cut a key for a High Caste house or a City Gate, you must see the Warrant of Authorization. Never cut a key on a handshake. Paper protects you."

🏁 THE CLOSING

[Chat Block 15] /me straightens her robes. "Let the fate of Drusus stay in your minds. Poverty is hard, but the executioner's block is harder."

[Chat Block 16] "Tomorrow, we shift from the Laws of the City to the Laws of the Soul. We will have a Poetry Reading titled 'The Weight of the Stone.' It deals with why we love this city, not just why we fear its laws."

[Chat Block 17] "Thank you to our players, and thank you to the Citizens. You are dismissed!"

(Step back. Signal Crier to close.)
