W11D4 - Story (Medical Fraud)

by Kati Evans

Here is the full production script for Week 11, Day 4.

To ensure this fills the 30–60 minute window, the Storyteller portion is written as a detective-style mystery involving forensic evidence (the wax seal). I have also included an interactive segment called "The Physician's Eye" to teach the audience how to spot a fake document.

Special Instruction: You must copy the "Part 2: The Story" section into a Notecard named Script: The Medical Fraud and give it to your Guest Speaker (or perform it yourself) before the event.

📜 SECOND LIFE SCRIPT: WEEK 11, DAY 4

Event: The Storyteller ("The Medical Fraud") Host: Kati Evans Guest Performer: The Storyteller (Guest or Kati) Target Duration: 40–50 Minutes

🟢 PRE-EVENT CHECKLIST

  • [ ] Rez the Stage. (Props: A table with a Medical Kit/Scrolls or a Green Candle representing the Physicians).

  • [ ] The Storyteller: Ensure they have the script notecard.

  • [ ] 1:00 PM: Start formal RP. Announce 5-minute gathering.

🎤 PART 1: THE INTRODUCTION (Kati)

(Walk to the podium. Look serious. Hold a scroll or paper.)

[Chat Block 1] /me steps onto the stage. She holds a scroll, tapping it rhythmically against her palm. "Tal, Citizens. Welcome to Day 4 of The Circle."

[Chat Block 2] "This week, we have talked about Ownership. We have talked about the Collar and the Brand. But there is a third requirement for owning a slave in Teletus: Health."

[Chat Block 3] "A slave is a biological machine. If the machine is broken, it is worthless. If the machine is diseased, it is dangerous."

[Chat Block 4] "Law 6.4.1 mandates an Annual Medical Exam by a Physician of the Isle. Law 6.4.2 states that ownership papers cannot be filed without a current exam."

[Chat Block 5] "But Physicians are expensive. And sometimes... a Master has a slave he needs to sell quickly, before she dies. He thinks he can fool the buyer. He thinks he can fool the Scribe."

[Chat Block 6] "Today, our Storyteller brings us the tale of 'The Medical Fraud.' It is the story of Merchant Varis, a man who tried to forge the Green Seal, and learned that ink dries, but lies rot."

/me steps down and takes a seat near the fire, gesturing for the Storyteller to take the chair.

📖 PART 2: THE STORY (For the Guest Speaker)

(Give this text to your Storyteller. They should paste one block at a time, pacing themselves. 15-20 seconds between blocks.)

[Block 1] /me sits in the storyteller's chair, rubbing their chin thoughtfully. "Varis was a mid-level trader. He dealt in furs and amber. But one day, he acquired a slave girl named Lina in a gambling debt. Lina was stunning. Red hair, green eyes. She was worth a thousand silver tarns easily."

[Block 2] "But Lina had a secret. She had The Cough. Not a simple cold, but the deep lung-rot that spreads in the damp. Varis heard her coughing at night. He saw the blood on her handkerchief."

[Block 3] "He knew if he took her to a Physician, she would be condemned. They would mark her papers 'Unfit' and order her destroyed to stop the contagion. Varis would lose his thousand tarns."

[Block 4] "Greed whispered to him. 'She looks healthy during the day,' Greed said. 'Just sell her fast. Before she coughs.'"

[Block 5] "So, Varis took an old medical scroll from a healthy slave who had died years ago. He scraped off the name. He wrote in 'Lina.' He copied the signature of the High Physician."

[Block 6] /me mimes melting wax. "Then, he did the unthinkable. He took a generic ring and pressed it into green wax. It looked like the Physician's Seal... if you squinted. It was a forgery."

[Block 7] "He took Lina to the auction block. She was beautiful. The bidding was fierce. A young Scribe won the auction for 1,200 silver tarns. Varis smiled. He handed over the forged papers. He took the coin."

[Block 8] "But the buyer was a Scribe. He lived by the pen. He looked at the wax seal on the medical report. He frowned. 'This wax,' he said. 'It is too soft. And the Green... it is the wrong shade.'"

[Block 9] "The Scribe held the paper up to the light. 'And this signature... the ink is fresh, but the parchment is old.'"

[Block 10] "Varis tried to run. 'No refunds!' he shouted. But the Scribe called the Guards."

[Block 11] "They brought a real Physician. He listened to Lina's chest. He heard the rattle of death. 'She is plagued,' the Physician said. 'And this Seal is a clumsy fake.'"

[Block 12] "Varis was charged with Fraud (Law 5.5) and Endangering the City. He tried to sell a plague-carrier into a Citizen's home."

[Block 13] "The coin was seized. Lina was... mercifully put to sleep. And Varis? He was branded on the forehead with the word 'LIAR' and sent to the mines, where the dust would fill his lungs just as it had filled the girl's."

(The Storyteller bows/nods.)

🎤 PART 3: THE ANALYSIS (Kati Returns)

(Walk back to the podium.)

[Chat Block 14] /me stands and nods to the Storyteller. "Varis thought he was cheating a buyer. In truth, he was attacking the safety of the City."

[Chat Block 15] "Law 6.4.1 exists to stop plagues. If we allow sick slaves to be traded, the Pox spreads from house to house. The Physician's Seal is the guarantee of safety."

[Chat Block 16] "Also, remember Law 6.4.2: 'Slave Papers cannot be filed without a current... examination on file... not older than a year.' Papers expire. Sickness does not wait."

🩺 PART 4: THE PHYSICIAN'S EYE (Interactive)

[Chat Block 17] /me leans forward. "I want to teach you how to spot a bad deal. I will describe a slave's papers. You tell me: BUY (Legal) or REPORT (Illegal)?"

[Scenario 1] "Scenario 1: A Master offers you a strong tower slave. The Medical Paper is signed and sealed by a known Physician. But the date on the exam is 14 months ago. Buy or Report?" (WAIT. Answer: REPORT/REJECT.)

[Chat Block 18] "Verdict: REJECT. Law 6.4.1 requires an annual exam. Those papers are expired. The slave could have caught leprosy in the last two months. Demand a new exam before you pay."

[Scenario 2] "Scenario 2: A Master offers a girl. Her papers say 'Clean Health.' But you notice she is sweating heavily and her eyes are yellow. The Master says, 'It is just the heat.' Buy or Report?" (WAIT. Answer: REPORT.)

[Chat Block 19] "Verdict: REPORT. The paper says one thing, the eyes say another. The paper may be forged, or the exam was done before she got sick. Trust your eyes over the ink. Call a Magistrate."

[Scenario 3] "Scenario 3: A Master sells a girl with a limp. Her papers clearly state: 'Permanent injury to left leg. Otherwise healthy.' The seal is fresh. Buy or Report?" (WAIT. Answer: BUY.)

[Chat Block 20] "Verdict: BUY (if you want). This is honest commerce. The defect is disclosed. The Physician certified that the limp is an injury, not a disease. This is a legal sale."

❓ PART 5: Q&A SEGMENT

[Chat Block 21] "I will take questions now regarding Medicals, Sales, or Forgery."

(Signal PLANT A)

[PLANT A QUESTION] (Plant asks): "Mistress! Who pays for the Medical Exam? The Seller or the Buyer?"

[Chat Block 22 - Answer] /me nods. "By custom, the Seller must provide the current papers. It is his responsibility to prove his goods are sound."

[Chat Block 23] "However... if the papers are old and the Buyer demands a new exam 'just to be sure,' the Buyer often pays the Physician's fee. It is a matter of negotiation. But the responsibility lies with the Owner."

(Signal PLANT B)

[PLANT B QUESTION] (Plant asks): "Mistress, what if I buy a slave and she gets sick the next day? Can I return her?"

[Chat Block 24 - Answer] /me smiles grimly. "Only if you can prove she was sick before the sale (Fraud)."

[Chat Block 25] "If she catches a cold in your wagon on the way home? That is your bad luck. You own the property, you own the risk. That is why you check the papers before coin changes hands."

🏁 THE CLOSING

[Chat Block 26] /me smooths her robes. "Slavery is a business of flesh and blood. Blood carries secrets. Do not buy secrets."

[Chat Block 27] "Tomorrow is the end of Week 11. We have covered the paperwork of ownership."

[Chat Block 28] "Day 5 will be an Open Forum. We will discuss the Kennels and the rules of Stray Property. If you lose your slave, or find one, you need to know these rules."

[Chat Block 29] "Thank you to our Storyteller. The Circle is closed!"

(Signal Crier/Slave to end.)
